Having already spent thousands on worthless products, you’ve decided to search the Internet for free advice on list building.

After reading several posts in forums you’ve basically learned to just, “Put up an opt-in box and give something away for free.”  Like magic, droves of people will sign up, your server will crash from the influx of traffic, and you can finally retire.

Sure, that tactic worked in 1995.  Nowadays, people aren’t willing to enter their email addresses into just any glory hole of promised wealth.

Since your subscriber list is still hovering in the double digits, even after you’ve offered to give away the farm, it’s time to learn new list building methods.

To start, forget about that tiny opt-in box in the corner of your site that people are blind to.  Instead, if your goal is to collect email addresses, make sure everything on the page leads people to taking that action.

For example, when visitors arrive on your page, hit them with a big, unavoidable, pop up, with an incredibly compelling reason to enter their names and email addresses.

After they ignore the message, don’t enter their info, and close the window (we know that’s what usually happens), make sure everything on the page is a minefield of links to a static sign up page.

That’s the big secret.  You want to create a static web-page that’s dedicated just to getting their names and email addresses.

This is basically a squeeze page with a giant headline giving them a benefit oriented reason for entering their information.

There’s nothing to distract them on the page, just a big, fat, reason to join your list.

How do you create a minefield of links that almost guarantees they see your static page?  You can link to the page from banners, other static pages, blog posts, ebook covers, or anywhere else people may want to click.

It’s a two step process. 

Step 1, make it almost impossible for them avoid your static page.

Step 2, test the conversion rate of your static page and make it better and better to increase sign ups.

Of course, you’ll still probably be giving something away in exchange for their info.  However, this static page gives you more room to sell them on how good that free thing is.

By the way, don’t try to get, “All the traffic in the world,” instead concentrate on getting highly targeted, quality traffic.

Also, notice, I said, “what action do you want folks to take?”  Don’t distract people with a bunch of options.  Make it so everybody eventually does the same thing.

 If it’s a sales page, they should only be able to do one of three things.  They can leave, buy, or give you their email addresses before they leave.

Well, here’s a head start on building your list for free with a blog.

Don’t shove a tiny opt-in box in the corner of your blog and expect people to, “Subscribe to your newsletter.”

Make it impossible for people to avoid your sign up page.  You do this by filling your site with links, banners, posts, pages, and videos that lead people to a static page with only one purpose:  collect names and email addresses.

Don’t use some giant header graphic!  Fancy headers make websites load slowly and distract visitors from the action you desire.  In this case, we want their names and email addresses and we want them now!

 Another thing you may not know is how much the color of your headline matters.

On one hand, if you sell products or services outside of the Internet marketing world, your headline should be in gigantic red letters.

On the other hand, if you’re in the Internet marketing bubble, spectacularly wild colors for headlines come in and out of style.  Read sales letters that you know to be converting and see if there’s a crazy new color that’s, “in” for headlines.

One way to know something is converting is by going to Clickbank and doing a little research.  If you see a product in the number one spot for weeks on end, you know that’s a sales letter you should check out.

People have tested this whole headline color thing and even though red is normally the best, Internet marketers get bored with seeing it so much.

The result is if you’re trying to reach them, they aren’t noticing your red headlines as much as they used to.

 By shocking them with something different, you’ll grab their attention and that is, after all, the desired result of a headline.

One of the best ways to build your list of leads up is to simply write really great content on your blog.  Don’t pitch products or services, just provide helpful info.

After you get that going (say five or ten posts), fill your blog up with links and banners that all take people to your static page where they can give you their names and email addresses.

On this webpage, write a huge headline offering something for free (such as a video), add a sub-headline that mentions lots of benefits succinctly, and then have an opt-in form where people enter their names and email addresses.

After visitors confirm their subscriptions, your autoresponder can email a link to the free product you were offering.

Now, it’s just a matter of adding more excellent pots to your blog.

Continue to not sell, and keep giving away free stuff in exchange for email addresses.  Try various headlines and offers until your page converts above 50%.

 In the end, it all comes down to converting visitors.  Traffic is awesome, but if you can’t convert that traffic into people that join your email list, you won’t be building a business.
